About Hydrodipping

Hydro-dipping is also known as water transfer imaging and immersion printing, it is a process of applying print designs to 3D objects with the use of liquid. It can be used on almost any substrate, such as wood, plastic, glass, and metal. Unlimited potential.

This method of surface decoration is ideal for giving 360-degree coverage of objects, even in hard-to-reach spots. A polyvinyl alcohol film which is printed with the desired design/graphic, it is laid across the surface of the water in a specialised dipping tank; the surface tension of the water allows the print to wrap around the shape of any object. This is reinforced with a clear protective coating.

Hydrodipping Process

Transform any 3-dimensional surface.

This process IS NOT A STICK ON APPLICATION so there is no fading, cracking, peeling, blistering or lose edges that can lift away.

The key element to producing any quality finish is surface preparation – especially before we apply the foundation layer of primer coats. This is one of the most important parts of the process because if it isn’t performed in the right way you could experience faults further down the track. It all starts in the correct preparation, base coating, dipping, washing & cleaning and as a final stage the clear coating and polishing to achieve a permanent surface solution.

All parts that we receive are washed from any surface contamination, rinsed, dried, sanded, and prepared ready for the dipping process.

We can coat all types of metals, plastics, ceramic and fibreglass surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?
The cost for each item varies. It depends on what film you choose and what labour is involved. But if you want to stand out from the pack and be different, hydrodipping is the way to go. Send us an email with pictures and send you a quote.
What type of items can be dipped?
A wide variety of flat or 3-D shapes and manufacturing materials (plastics, metals, glass, wood, etc.) can be decorated with Water Transfer Printing technology.
How durable is Water Transfer Printing?
We like to let our product speak for itself. Some of our largest clientele are automobile, boat, and firearm manufacturers who demand the highest standards of quality and durability. Many parts that are decorated using our materials spend most their lives in direct sun exposure, such as boat instrument panels. The inks we use to print our patterns are developed and tested using Xenon Arc testing, ensuring the coating retains its colour and integrity in prolonged sun exposure and other environmental conditions. Our clear coat is an automotive-grade, which is also designed to withstand nature and time.
How long does the process take from start to finish?
It all depends on the complexity of the item being processed. For example, a dashboard for a pick-up truck can take approximately 30 minutes of total “hands-on” time to complete (this does not include unattended time like drying/curing). The process can be sped up with our automated solutions including our Automatic Spray System, Wash Stations, and Infrared Heaters.
How long does it take to create a custom hydrographic film?
Artwork can usually be taken through the cylinder engraving process to prototype film within just 4-6 weeks.
Can items that are not correctly decorated be re-dipped?
Yes, of course. Items that do not meet your quality requirements can be painted and dipped again.
